Bethlehem - A number of students of the Environmental Club at the Terra Sancta school, in Bethlehem, celebrated the arrival of the migratory swift bird to the city. There were a number of awareness raising activities about the environment and the bird. The swift was observed as it flew around the nesting boxes that had been placed on the school’s walls.

Palestine Society for Environment and Sustainable Development and the School Environmental Club had prepared 60 educational panels about birds and natural plants for an environmental exhibition entitled, “Coexistence with Nature”. This was part of the awareness activities through Mahmiyat project, and was with the support of the Hanns Seidel Foundation.

About 500 students visited the exhibition to get to know some of the components of biodiversity in Palestine. The students provided the visitors with presentations about the swift bird, some other birds, and various plants.

The activities included a field tour to closely observe the bird near the school. There was also a visit to the Al Auja Reserve in Jericho to observe the birds there, and to learn about the nature, geography, trees and plants of the reserve. The students were trained to document live bird observations through scientific papers entitled, “Research in Nature”.
