Mahmiyat.ps: Water Vital for the Preservation of Migratory Birds
13 May 2023

Mahmiyat.ps has underscored the significance of commemorating the International Day of Migratory Birds, observed annually on May 13th. This year's theme, "Water: Preserving the Life of Birds," highlights the crucial role of water in sustaining migratory bird populations.

According to mahmiyat.ps, the sustainability of bird's hinges on the availability of water. Migratory birds rely on various water sources and habitats such as lakes, rivers, streams, ponds, swamps, and coastal wetlands for reproduction. Preserving these vital components is essential for the protection of birds of all species.

Palestine is home to numerous significant habitats, including the Gaza Valley in the Gaza Strip, Solomon's Pools south of Bethlehem, and Marj Ibn Amer in Jenin, which transforms into a watery haven during the winter season.

However, mahmiyat.ps also highlights the growing threats to global water systems, including those within Palestine, due to human activities, rapid urbanization, climate change, pollution, and other factors. These activities and influences jeopardize and impact the integrity of water systems.

In response, Palestine Reserves, in collaboration with partners and with support from the Hanns Seidel Foundation, endeavors to raise awareness about the importance of migratory birds and their critical habitats. Recent activities have included informative tours of the Marj Bin Amer area in Jenin, organized alongside the Palestinian Society for Environment and Sustainable Development. Additionally, with the backing of the Hanns Seidel Foundation, Palestine Reserves has compiled a comprehensive list of bird species in Marj Ibn Amer.

Through the mahmiyat.ps Project, implemented by the Palestinian Society for Environment and Sustainable Development in cooperation with the Environmental Quality Authority, a book titled "Wildlife Protection Guide" has been published. This guide identifies protected animals and birds, prohibiting their trade and hunting.

By promoting awareness and taking proactive measures to protect migratory birds and their habitats, mahmiyat.ps aims to safeguard these remarkable creatures from poaching and preserve their critical role in ecosystems. The organization remains committed to its partnership with the Hanns Seidel Foundation, working towards a sustainable future for migratory birds and the conservation of Palestine's natural heritage.
