Environmental awareness lectures for Schools

Palestine Society for Environment and Sustainable Development held educational awareness lectures and hikes for the ecology clubs in the governorates of Bethlehem, Jericho and the Northern Jordan Valley as part of a series for raising awareness programs implemented in cooperation with the Environmental Quality Authority and with the support of the Hanns Seidel Foundation through Mahmiyat project.

The awareness lectures given by the Executive Director of the Society, Mr. Saed Al Shomaly, about the reality of biodiversity and the importance of protecting nature and its various components, in addition to detailed explanation for the use of Mahmiyat.ps  website and how to benefit from environmental information in it as a Palestinian resource.

Field trips were also implemented in the project including a hike of 7-km in Jerusalem Wilderness and Mar Saba Monastery which is one of the oldest monasteries in the world. The ecology club supervisor, Mr. Amer Mosleh, and the director of the outreach department at the Environmental Authority, Ms. Naama Kanaan.

The awareness lectures, which targeted over 250 students, included introducing the importance of the Barn owl in Jordan Valley, which is a friend of farmers.

These lectures come within the objectives of Mahmiyat project in promoting environmental awareness about the importance of nature reserves, identifying biodiversity, the importance of protecting migratory and endemic birds and plants in Palestine. Moreover, it aims at raising the environmental education of students, developing positive attitudes to preserve the surrounding nature, building learning and monitoring skills, and enhancing their cooperation values and that is by using stimulating group games for education.
